The purchase of a new grave however can significantly add to the cost of a funeral. Burial Burial remains the most frequently chosen interment method in Ireland, as many families desire a permanent final resting place for their loved ones. Some, but not all cemeteries offer single and family plots, so if your preference is for generations to be buried together, the relevant questions need to be asked. In order to open an existing grave we will need the grave number. Alternatively, you will need to provide the details of the person, or persons previously interred in that grave. We will then take care of all necessary arrangements. Cremation During the cremation process, both the body and the coffin are cremated. The ashes are usually available within 48 hours following the cremation. Options for the final resting place are varied. You may choose to have the remains interred in a Garden of Remembrance, a Columbarium Wall, an existing family grave, or scattered in a significant location. We will carry out all relevant and legal procedures, from serving as acting witness to the Application for Cremation, to organising the completion of Medical Certificate by the deceased's attending doctor. A family tradition, now upheld by the fifth generation of Colliers, began when William Collier married into the Miller family, established undertakers with a business dating back to 1837. William’s son Thomas eventually took over, relocating in 1928 to a Castle Street premises, where he also launched a nationwide coffin manufacturing business. In those days, funeral homes as they are now known did not yet exist. Instead, an undertaker would prepare the body at the very place where the funeral was to begin—usually in the family home, with a wake. That tradition began to change in the 1970s. And it was during that time that Thomas’ sons Des and Tommy opened a funeral home, as we know them today, at the Castle Street premises. There the third generation of Colliers operated, until economic difficulties in the coffin manufacturing business brought about by the recession of the 1980s, forced the business to close. The family moved to its current address on Old Connaught Avenue in 1987. In 2008 the building was extended, creating a beautiful, relaxed space with natural light, suitable for religious and non-religious funerals. The main service room can comfortably accommodate up to 130 people. A separate drawing room with a fireplace provides a comfortable room with added privacy.
